one of these things is just like the other

Being too “matchy-matchy” is usually considered a fashion and beauty no-no, unless you can pull it off in the right way. I like the idea of matching your nails to your lips. It’s an understated way to tie your look together. The fact that the two match is not immediately obvious which is why I think I’m drawn to this look. The trend isn’t necessarily a new one, just one that seems to have made a strong comeback. Here are some of my favourite colour-coordinating lip and nail combos in the season’s hottest shades.

1. Clinique Lipstick in Red-y To Wear + Butter London Come to Bed Red
2. MAC Viva Glam in Gaga 2 + Dior Vernis in Camel
3. Nars Lipstick in Heat Wave + Essie in Clambake
4. Dior Addict Lipstick in Perfecto + OPI Tease-y Does it

forever young

I was doing a little makeup shopping with a friend recently and realized that we’ve suddenly become conscious of preventing wrinkles. Sounds a little crazy since we’re in our mid-twenties, right? But I find that “decreasing the appearance of fine lines” is now a key characteristic of the makeup and products I buy. I see nothing wrong with a little prevention in my twenties and I try to choose products with simple ingredients to help keep aging at bay. Of course, the tried and true daily SPF is a must have, but here are a few easy products, free of harsh wrinkle-fighting ingredients, which can be used on younger skin for a little prevention.

1. Philosophy Turbo Booster C Powder
This product is your morning cup of OJ amplified. It’s 99% Vitamin C, a strong antioxidant to prevent premature aging, fight off environmental damage and improve the overall texture of your skin. The powder simply mixes in with your daily moisturizer. Easy.
2. Clinique Youth Surge SPF 15 Age Decelerating Moisturizer

I clearly like the idea of combining wrinkle-fighting ingredients with daily moisturizers….No need for extra steps in your morning routine. I need products that do doubly-duty and this moisturizer does just that. It boosts the production of collagen and elastin while it hydrates to give your skin a little plump.
3. Ole Henriksen Ultimate Lift Eye Gel
The skin around our eyes is the most sensitive and is usually among the first to show the signs of aging. Love that this product is all natural. It’s packed with cucumber, flower and fruit extracts to tighten, energize and revitalize the sensitive skin around the eyes fighting off the appearance of wrinkles and lines.

lusting after: Too Faced Sweet Dreams Makeup Collection

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a sucker for eye-catching packaging and with this year’s holiday makeup collections, the top beauty brands are pulling out all the stops. On my holiday wish list (because it’s never too early to start one) is Too Faced’s Sweet Dreams Makeup Collection. The fairytale-like packaging is a work of art but the sheer amount of product that you get is the real reason why this palette is so dream-worthy. You get 15 dreamy eye shadows – from the lightest neutrals to the deepest mauves.  You also get a full size of Shadow Insurance Primer – a best seller, a sultry matte bronzer, a warm highlighter and two stunning blushes. What more could you ask for? Makeup dreams really can come true.

lights, camera, action Smashbox and Sephora Bloor St. makeover event

Keeping in with the spirit of the Toronto International Film Festival, Smashbox and Sephora Bloor St. hosted a Lights, Camera, Action event to showcase the latest goodies and to offer free makeovers. Lori Taylor, Smashbox’s Pro Lead Artist was on hand to give us Toronto beauty addicts the Hollywood look. I had the privilege to sit down with her, chat about the brand and get my makeup done. We opted for a fresh face, eyes that pop and a rosy pout. Here are the unbelievable new products that Lori used to create my look.

1. Photo Finish Lid Primer
For the perfect canvas, Lori used this moisturizing and smoothing primer. Lori’s tip: Apply from the lash line to the brow for a flawless lid.
2. Photo Op Eye Shadow Trio in Dark Room

One of 16 new eyes shadow trios at Sephora, Dark Room is a stunning combination of pale pink, shimmery grey and matte black. What’s genius: if you peel back the label, you’ll find easy application tips.
3. Cream Eye Liner Palette in Proof

To really make my eyes pop, Lori used this popular eyeliner palette. To soften the look, she then lightly smudged and blended the colour in with my eye shadow.
4. Full Exposure Mascara in Jet Black

This mascara volumizes and lengthens while keeping lashes from becoming brittle with its olive oil properties.
5. Brow Tech to Go in Taupe
A medium taupe brown, this long-wearing waterproof pencil and soft-hold gel completes your look and frames your eyes.
6. Photo Finish Hydrating Foundation Primer
New for fall, this innovative oil-free primer prepares your skin for makeup by leaving it feeling invigorated and quenched. Bonus: it fills in fine lines and pores.
7. Studio Skin 15 Hour Wear Foundation SPF 10 in #’s 1.1 and 1.2
Another brand new product, this foundation has me hooked. It’s oil-free, contains SPF 10 and provides customizable coverage. Lori’s tip: don’t be afraid to combine shades for the perfect match and for sheer coverage mix the product in with a little water.
8. HALO Hydrating Perfecting Powder in Light
Oil-free and paraben free, this powder hides fine lines, wrinkles and large pores. What makes this product even more amazing: it is 21 grams of powder which equals 5 separate pressed powders.
9. Girls on Film Blush Rush in Pose

From Smashbox’s Fall 2011 Girls on Film collection, Lori used this long-wearing rosy pink blush to accentuate my cheeks.
10. Lip Enhancing Gloss in Illume and Capture
To create a natural long-lasting rosy lip, Lori combined Illume, a sheer golden champagne shimmer and Capture, a metallic golden copper.

my beauty bag: Yves Saint Laurent Volupté Sheer Candy 04 Succulent Pomegranate

While on my stop over in Frankfurt, Germany during my recent trip, I, like any other make-up addict headed straight for the duty-free makeup counters. After picking up a few things, I spotted this YSL Volupté Sheer Candy glossy balm in Succulent Pomegranate. The consultant grabbed a new tube for me; I paid and was off to my plane with minutes to spare. Excited to put on my new gloss, I opened the box and realized I was given the wrong shade. Delay the plane, this is an emergency! Ok, no, I didn’t cause a scene but I did ask if I had enough time to run and exchange it. I didn’t. On my way back to Canada, I stopped at the same duty-free shop, picked up the lip balm again only to have the cashier forget to put it in my bag. I realized somewhere over Greenland. Why was I not supposed to have this gloss?! Back home, I went on the hunt and found it at Holt Renfrew. The sheer veil of colour brightens up my face and even after the sheen wares off the colour ever so lightly stains my lips and lasts for hours. It smells delicious and packs a punch of vitamins and anti-oxidants to nourish and hydrate your lips for up to eight hours. It was definitely worth the trouble to my hands on it!

lusting after: Chanel Les Jeans De Chanel Collection

Inspired by what is arguably my favourite piece of clothing, the blue jean, Chanel released this stunning set of blue nail polishes during New York’s Fashion’s Night Out on September 8. The Le Jeans De Chanel collection features three stunning limited-edition shades. But like anything else exclusive and buzz-worthy, there’s a catch: the collection can only be found in exclusive Chanel boutiques or online which is why I think I’m lusting after this collection even more. We often want what we can’t very easily have, right?

1. Blue Boy
A deep, rich blue to satisfy the needs of any trendsetting denim risk-taker.
2. Coco Blue
A playful, muted blue that can be worn as effortlessly as your go-to pair of worn-in faded jeans.
3. Blue Rebel
My favourite of the three, this shade recalls the saturated ink dye used in the most flattering pair of dark denim.
